West Ham's debt restricted our transfer spending admits Avram Grant
West Ham United's manager, Avram Grant, says he did not have enough money to spend during the summer transfer window, but admitted that the club's owners, David Sullivan and David Gold, are "doing their best". Grant;s team lost their opening three Premier League matches of the season and on Saturday face the champions Chelsea, who have won their opening three. And Grant, who succeeded Gianfranco Zola at Upton Park in the summer, said: "The situation at West Ham is not good because there is a lot of debt. "I would be more happy with a few more million to spend but I know the situation. The owners are trying to do the best. You must know that if the owners did not buy West Ham then West Ham could have been bankrupt. In the future I think we will have more money to spend." Grant's net spend before the transfer window shut at the beginning of the month was £6m, which bought him the Mexico forward Pablo Barrera, the New Zealand defender Winston Reid and Lyon's Frédéric Piquionne. He also has a lengthy injury list, which includes Jack Collison, Zavon Hines, Peter Kurucz and Anthony Edgar, who have long-term problems, plus the German Thomas Hitzlsperger with a thigh strain. But Grant is confident that West Ham fans are backing him and the team. "The supporters are good and we will try our best to make them happy," he added on Talksport. "They are very good, the reception has been good. The most important thing is that they are behind the team. I must say, everyone in the club is trying to do their best."
