The German press are having a field day over Paul the octopus, after the mystic cephalopod correctly predicted the German football team would lose to Spain in the semi-final of the World Cup, the Times reports on page 17. "Throw him in the frying pan", wrote the Berliner Kurier newspaper, a sentiment echoed by the rather more upmarket Die Welt and Suddeutsche Zietung. The Spanish PM Jose Luis Rodriguez even joked that he was thinking about sending a protection team to the Oberhausen Sea Life centre, where Paul resides. Paul was born in England, of course (in Weybridge to be precise). perhaps the Daily Mirror, which mounted a successful campaign to get the 1966 World Cup ball back from Germany, should launch another to have him repatriated? Then again, he also predicted England would lose to Germany, so he may not even be safe back here.
