Sex and the City 2 disappointment could lead to prequel
The travails of Sex and the City 2 at the US box office have reportedly convinced studio executives that it might be time to plump for a younger model: plans are afoot to bring creator Candace Bushnell's prequel tale The Carrie Diaries to the big screen, according to eonline.com . Bushnell's first novel about a teenage Carrie Bradshaw, the central figure in the Sex and the City TV series and movies, was published in April, with a second instalment due to arrive next year. The first book centres on the young fashionista's high school years in Connecticut, while the second will reportedly concentrate on her arrival in New York City. A source told eonline.com that despite the latest film's disappointing box office opening – it opened in third place in the US with poor $37m (£25m) takings following terrible reviews – the movie had still made $90m across the globe. "People are still having fun with it. Of course they want the teen years," the source said. Speaking at the film's New York premiere last week, Bushnell said she was unaware of any movie talks about The Carrie Diaries. In the past, the writer has mentioned Miley Cyrus as a possible younger Carrie, though the 17-year-old actor and singer might be a little old for the role by the time it moves into production. A prequel movie might suggest the end of the line for the current movie series, which stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis. Of the characters they play, only Carrie appears in the first prequel novel, though there are rumours that Cattrall's libidinous PR, Samantha Jones, is set for a cameo in future books. The project is being lined up at New Line, the Warner Bros company which owns the rights to the Sex and the City films, eonline reports.
