Andy Carroll in line for call-up to senior England squad
The Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has been left out of the England Under-21 squad, suggesting he may be called into the senior set-up for the European Championship qualifier against Montenegro on 12 October. Doubts over Wayne Rooney's fitness, injuries to Jermain Defoe and Bobby Zamora, plus Emile Heskey's international retirement, mean the 21-year-old forward could find himself elevated to Fabio Capello's squad, after impressing for Newcastle. Carroll has scored four goals in the Premier League this season, including a hat-trick in the 6-0 rout of Aston Villa. Also in contention for the senior squad is Jack Wilshere, who has been named in the Under-21 party to face Romania at Norwich next Friday along with his Arsenal team-mate Kieran Gibbs. The 18-year-old Wilshere was a substitute in last month's friendly against Bulgaria and his recent performances for his club are likely to have bolstered his case for inclusion in Capello's plans.
