Tyler Brûlé takes 101st slot in the MediaGuardian 100 – but did he deserve to?

It has become a tradition, albeit only a one-year-old one, in the week after the Media Guardian 100 to publish a profile of the 101st most powerful person in the media as chosen by you, the readers . But this year's poll took an unexpected turn after the former Wallpaper* editor and Monocle founder Tyler Brûlé won with 160 last-minute votes. Further investigation revealed they were all from an internet address corresponding to … the London headquarters of Brûlé's publishing group, Winkreative. So in purely numerical terms, Brûlé was the winner. But the multiple voting – always a possibility in an online poll – was not exactly in the spirit of the MediaGuardian 100, and this year's runner-up, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat , felt like a more worthy winner. We leave it up to you to decide. "This is a loyal building. I am sure if someone saw we were fifth they would rally the troops," Brûlé told MediaGuardian. And there we were thinking it would be the Whovians who would organise a voting campaign. "I say give it to Brûlé – he cares about being 101st (and obviously respects the list) so at least he'll appreciate it!" said one online commenter, michiemoo. Others were less keen. Brûlé ended up with 47.9% of the votes, ahead of Moffat, with 25.5%. Jeremy Paxman finished third (17.6%) ahead of Daily Telegraph editor Tony Gallagher (6.5%) and Spotify founder Daniel Ek , with 2.6%. How we conduct next year's poll remains to be seen, but it is too late to do anything about this year's result. If only we could travel back in time , eh?
