Nigel Slater's memoir to be adapted for BBC1 by Billy Elliot writer
Nigel Slater 's childhood memoir is being turned into a BBC1 drama that will portray him as "the Billy Elliot of the kitchen". The 90-minute adaptation of Toast is being made by London-based Ruby Films, which also produced Small Island, The Other Boleyn Girl and Brick Lane. The screenplay is by Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall. Ruby co-founder Paul Trijbits told Broadcast magazine: "It's about ambition in the face of huge hindrances. Slater is iconic – he represents a lot of things we love about Britain." The Observer writer's 2003 book Toast describes his lonely upbringing on the Worcestershire/Herefordshire border following his mother's death, how he learned to cook and his memories of favourite foods.
