Public meeting to discuss Leeds South Bank redevelopment

A debate on the future of the area to the south of Leeds city centre will be held next Monday. Leeds residents are being invited to an open workshop on how to create a 'world-class sustainable development to the south of the River Aire' at 5.30pm at the Leeds Design Innovation Centre, The Calls, at 5.30pm. The event is being held by the Leeds Sustainable Development Group (LSDG), a network of individuals who share a commitment to their city and want to work together to make it better. LSDG's first objective is to create a self-sustaining, open and inclusive forum to enable everyone in Leeds to say what sort of place they want to live in, to put forward ideas and to participate in developing proposals and options, at a stage when it can make a difference. An introduction on its website says: "The second objective is to contribute to the promotion of a wide-ranging debate, bringing together the city, its practitioners, academics, thinkers, designers, researchers and others who have an interest in, or wish to make a contribution to, the creation of a shared vision for Leeds. "These objectives have been agreed on the understanding that there is an over-riding need, matched by a current opportunity, to investigate new approaches to create truly sustainable forms of development for the city." It adds: "The LSDG has decided that there is a need for radical change in the way we plan our future and there is an opportunity in the current economic and political climate of change to take stock, reassess the city's role in the future and contribute to the need to deliver long-term sustainable development by linking rigorous analysis with a shared vision for the future." The LSDG follows the launch of Leeds Council's consultation on the redevelopment of the South Bank area - which includes a city centre park - in July.
