Mystery Jets: Serotonin
This Twickenham band's third album confirms what a transformation they've undergone since their 2006 debut, from proggy kooks to 80s-flavoured MOR merchants redolent of Duran Duran's twee-er offspring. So frontman Blaine Harrison's gushing heartbreak is framed by cavernous drums and spacey synths, while piano ballad "Too Late to Talk" briefly threatens to morph into "I Will Always Love You". Saccharine it is, but you'd need a heart of granite not to respond to songs this buoyant, while the psych-pop swirl of "Flash a Hungry Smile" tantalisingly suggests another role awaits them – that of a less pretentious MGMT.
