Vol 2 by Wooden Shjips

Ripley Johnson formed Wooden Shjips in 2003 to make spacey psychedelic rock with non-musicians, or musicians playing unfamiliar instruments, released only on limited vinyl. But then the band grew popular and two albums emerged. Now, in a series of compilations, they are saving the rest of their material from obscurity. "Loose Lips" layers fuzzy guitar abstractions and echoing vocals over a tight repetitive groove. So do the six other tracks on Vol 2, but the likes of "Contact", an extended Serge Gainsbourg cover, have an agreeably hypnotic effect.
