Cat Deeley: five things I know about style

1) Be your own style icon. It's great to admire other people's fashion choices, but I don't think you should idolise anyone. Style is a very personal thing and women should develop their own individual look. 2) Dress for yourself. Above all, have fun. I was at a party last week in LA and they had this enormous feathered creation – it was a 6ft-wide harness covered in ostrich feathers. I thought: "Sure, why not?" and tried it on. 3) Accessorise wisely. Jewellery is a great way to take your look from day to night. I love layering jewellery, but a little restraint is useful. As Coco Chanel once said: "Accessorise, then remove the last item you put on." 4) Mix up your wardrobe. I love vintage shopping in LA – the flea markets are fabulous. I also love high-street shopping in London. I like to hit French Connection, Miss Selfridge, Whistles, Topshop and New Look. 5) British is best. I support British designers as much as I can. Stella McCartney, Christopher Bailey, Giles Deacon, Matthew Williamson and Mulberry are all amazing.
