Gabby Logan
Yesterday saw a swathe of changes to radio schedules, most notably on Radio 2 and 5 Live. Gabby Logan 's appointment to a new midday show on the latter came as something of a surprise when it was announced, and there were eyebrows raised about her suitability for such a key and sometimes heavyweight politics slot. The new show lops an hour off Victoria Derbyshire's show, which was on very strong form in its new two-hour incarnation, with an affecting interview with Sean Hodgson – his first in-depth since serving 27 years for crimes he didn't commit. But Logan's show does promise much-needed coherence to the all-important Wednesday coverage of Prime Minister's Questions, and on the strength of yesterday's debut, I've no doubt that she is perfectly capable of handling that. But there was a bewildering, exhausting amount of sport in the inaugural show. An interview with George Burley, recently sacked as manager of the Scottish football team, was followed by a longer chat to Owen Coyle, the manager controversially moving from Burnley to Bolton. Then there was a panel mulling over topical sporting questions at some length, and the first instalment of a daily guide to the World Cup. Logan was fine, but it was as if nobody had looked at the programme's list of ingredients and realised the results might be lumpy.
