London fashion week: 10 new trends from the streets
I pounded the pavements of the city during London fashion week, stalking only the coolest showgoers in a bid to uncover what's getting the fashion pack hot under the collar this spring/summer. No person went unnoticed and no design detail unchecked ... Here are my top 10 need-to-know street style trends emerging from the capital this season. 1. Bright trousers Those wily fashionistas do like to keep us on our toes. We were expecting flared jeans and leather-clad legs, but no. Cropped trousers in vivid hues strode ahead in the style stakes instead. Yellow trousers, £55, Cos 2. Pleated midis Anyone not busting out a colourful trouser was invariably gliding between the catwalk shows in a knife-pleated mid-length skirt. Blue pleated skirt, £38, Topshop 3. Statement hats The popularity of the fedora waned a little this year in favour of the 70s floppy hat. Also topping outfits were sparkly cloches and embellished turbans. Red hat, £30, Asos 4. Leather rucksacks At any one time there are more 'It' bags then you'd want to shake even a very small stick at. But two clear winners emerged from the style set this season: leather rucksacks and all things Mulberry. Bag, £1,174, Mulberry 5. Wedges Despite the hoopla surrounding kitten heels, there were very few sightings of them at London fashion week. That perennial fashion favourite, the sky-high wedge, continued to reign supreme. Shoes, £255, Pedro Garcia at My Wardrobe 6. Ombre hair You may roll your eyes at this and proclaim that those in question simply hadn't got round to getting their roots touched up. That excuse won't wash when the 'dos in question were blending pink, blue, green or purple with au naturel hair colours. Dye, £8.95, Fudge (01282 683100) 7. Rings Statement necklaces have fallen out of favour, and have been replaced by rings. More specifically, rings that can double as a weapon, presumably so that the wearer can fight their way to the front row if need be. Spike ring, £8, Asos 8. Two-tone trenches By which we mean a trench with mismatched sleeves. You can achieve this look by layering a sleeveless coat over a jacket with a contrasting colour or pattern if you'd rather not invest in the real deal. Bonus fashion points will be awarded if said jacket is leather or faux fur. Trench, £290, Paul and Joe Sister at Net-a-Porter 9. Neon We are talking hurts-our-eyes, Day-Glo highlighter pen bright colour here. Just a flash of it, mind you: a trim on a dress, luminous yellow socks splicing a sedate trouser/shoe combo, or a piece of jewellery peering out from under a jumper sleeve. Bracelet, £85, Marc by Marc Jacobs at Net-a-Porter 10. Nail art No run-of-the-mill manicures here. Nails were fancy, trashy and intricate all at once, with everything from leopard print, Prada-esque stripes and crystal-embellished cuticles spotted. Sounds like hard work, doesn't it? Take the easy option and slap on some OPI crackle polish instead. Nail varnish, £10.50, OPI
