Trinity Mirror appoints digital media chief

Trinity Mirror, the publisher of the Daily Mirror, has appointed the former IGN Entertainment boss Chris Ellis as managing director of its newly created digital division. Ellis, formerly the European chief operating officer of Myspace, will oversee the publisher's digital media portfolio that includes 3am.co.uk , mirrorfootball.co.uk and youthemanager.co.uk . Trinity Mirror established its new "digital business unit" in November last year. Ellis, who starts in June, will report to Mark Hollinshead, the managing director of Trinity Mirror Nationals, which includes the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and the People. Ellis left the games network IGN Entertainment in December 2010, after two years as managing director of its international business. He joined IGN from Myspace, where he was the social network's chief operating officer for Europe for two years from 2006, following its ill-fated acquisition by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation when the site was at the height of its popularity. Previously, Ellis was AOL's senior vice president for Europe, a position he left in August 2006. Ellis said: "I'm delighted to be joining Trinity Mirror. I'm excited by the opportunity to lead the new dedicated digital group which, together with such a strong editorial heritage and passionate consumer base, means the company is well positioned to take full advantage of the growth of all things digital." Matt Kelly, publisher of the new digital division, will report to Ellis. Kelly was promoted in November, following the departure of David Black as Trinity Mirror's group director of digital publishing. Hollinshead added: "Chris has a wealth of experience in the digital world and I am delighted he is joining the business to accelerate our progress and drive our digital ambitions." • To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email [email protected] or phone 020 3353 3857.
