Chinese Whispers by Jan Wong

With her first book, Red China Blues , still banned in China, Canadian-born journalist Jan Wong again examines the Maoist zeal of her youth in this compelling story of her attempt to track down a Chinese woman she reported to the authorities while studying at Beijing University. Having repressed her guilt while working as a foreign correspondent in China during the 80s and 90s, Wong finally returns to Beijing– this time with her family– to find the woman and discover the consequences of her actions. But while Wong's account of her family's escapades in Beijing makes for entertaining reading, it's frustrating that she prioritises these over how she, like so many others, fell under the spell of the cultural revolution in the first place.
