Jessica Ennis set for World Indoors debut in Doha despite injury
The world heptathlon champion, Jessica Ennis, says she is back to her best before the World Indoor Championships in Doha next weekend. An injury suffered at the Glasgow Grand Prix in January kept her out of competition and full training for 10 days, but the 24-year-old says she is aiming to win the pentathlon world title. "Basically I slightly strained a ligament in my foot, but I've had scans on it and everything's fine with the structure of my foot bar a slight bit of fluid on the ligament," said Ennis. "The bones are fine and everything like that. I've had another scan and it's really looking good, no pain, and I'm back up to full training and preparing well for Doha." After Ennis opened her indoor season with eight personal bests across the pentathlon's five events, an injury to her right foot – the same foot that suffered multiple stress fractures in 2008, putting her out of the Beijing Olympics – was a worrying development. "Ideally I would have wanted to train through that week and a half but I don't feel that I have missed that much when I've got back into the full swing of things," she said. "My sessions are really positive, my times are really good – a little bit of a rest isn't always a bad thing. "I honestly don't feel like I've lost any fitness … before I had this foot niggle I was in great shape. I've only really lost high-intensity training for a week and a half but [I have] still been training hard, so I'd say my fitness is still very high really. [Out of 100] I'd say it's in the 90s." The Olympic champion, Nataliya Dobrynska, the silver medallist, Hyleas Fountain, and the bronze medallist, Tatyana Chernova, will compete in Doha. Ennis said she would not be overawed on her World Indoors debut. "I had wanted to compete a little bit more before Doha," she said, "but I'm nearly there and happy and ready to go."
