Bookmarked: Headingley Community Orchard

I found a link to an interesting project in Headingley which is well worth a look - the community orchard project. Basically, people who live in or around Headingley have recently come together to create small community orchards in an area with very little public green space. The group identifies unused or under-used land where fruit trees and bushes can be planted and cared for. At the moment members are working on two pieces of land and exploring a number of other sites. One plot is in Shire Oak Primary School, with a view to planting trees and soft fruit in the autumn. The other is at the back of the Natural Food Store. A few working parties have already been to clean out the rubbish and start preparing the ground. The Headingley Community Orchard is an informal initiative that operates under the auspices of the Headingley Development Trust , a community-owned organisation that promotes and develops a sustainable community in Headingley.
