BBC misses out on RTS news channel nomination
The BBC has missed out on being nominated for news channel of the year for the Royal Television Society television journalism awards. Sky News, al-Jazeera English and CNN International are the three shortlisted contenders for the prize at the 2010 RTS journalism awards. There is no place for the BBC News Channel. The BBC's David Dimbleby, ITV News's Julie Etchingham and Channel 4 News's Krishnan Guru-Murthy are vying for presenter of the year; while the BBC's 10pm News, ITV's News at Ten and the Channel 4 News at 7pm are finalists for news programme of the year. The corporation has 17 nominations for the awards across its regional, national and international output, including all the shortlisted stories in the scoop of the year category: the release of the Lockerbie bomber; Sir Fred Goodwin's pension; and the jailing of nursery school worker Vanessa George. Channel 4 has 10 nominations, including one for a Dispatches programme on the Taliban and another for a news report on the G20 protests. ITV has eight nominations, including one for its current affairs programme on the Stockwell shooting and another for Angus Walker as television journalist of the year. Joey Jones is nominated as specialist journalist of the year, one of five nominations for Sky News. Channel Five, UTV and Associated Press Television News have one nomination each. The awards are open to organisations broadcasting in the UK and companies that supply UK news broadcasters. The awards will be presented by the BBC newsreader, Sophie Raworth, on 24 February at the London Hilton on Park Lane. • To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email [email protected] or phone 020 3353 3857.
