The Bundle: parties, thinktanks and Barack Obama
It's been an exciting week at Guardian law as the attorney general, Dominic Grieve and Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf from the International Court of Justice, joined us to officially celebrate our launch. Dominic Grieve speculated which of the Babybarista characters may be based on him and had a surprise in store for our top tweeter , Afua Hirsch. We were also happy to announce a new partnership with LexisNexis, which will allow us to provide law reports and other specialist content free of charge on Guardian law . Coming soon, so watch this space... This week's top UK stories • Keir Starmer backs US-style murder charges for England and Wales • Extradition agreement under review as Theresa May launches inquiry • De La Rue faces Serious Fraud Office inquiry over 'falsified documents' This week's top stories from around the world • US court rejects Binyam Mohamed torture case • Canon law has allowed abuse priests to escape punishment, says lawyer • South Africa's forgotten bushmen fight for recognition This week's top comment, features and best of the blogs • Rupert Skilbeck: Barroso cannot stay silent on France's expulsion of Roma families • Neil Rose: Law firms may be forced to publish diversity figures • Video: Luis Moreno-Ocampo, prosecutor for the international criminal court What you said: best comments from our readers • On John Cooper's article setting out the case for an independent legal thinktank , MATHIEUCORREADESA said I do believe that, beyond any political second thoughts, the verynotion of having people debate, exchange and suggest ideas on the laws of the country can go towards a stronger feeling of being part of the nation, of existing not just as a consumer, worker and taxpayer, but also as an adult and responsible citizen, with her or his say as to the social, economic and political issues and how laws try to cope with these for the sake of the "common good". • On Ulele Burnham's hopes that a new thinktank will encourage minority groups to engage in law making , Lawyerlady said A quick look at the website of the Halsbury Law Exchange shows that 12 out of 14 members are middle aged white men. Are they really going to be able to make the practice of law more accessible to the traditionally excluded? • On Afua Hirsch's article on changes to homicide law , Semioclasm says The assisted suicide question means this is going to be discussed for a long long time, I'd say. I've been wondering all day how they could legislate this without stepping on the thin end of the wedge. State sanctioned or institutionalised killing is not what we need. Best of the web • At the Law Society Gazette, Eduardo Reyes reports that the Government Legal Service is facing deep cuts • At Slate magazine, Dahlia Lithwick explains why the National Rifle Association suddenly cares so much about US Supreme Court nomination battles. • On youtube, Moving Forward through Justice is a documentary about the outreach work of the Khmer Rouge genocide court and its impact on Cambodian society.
