Nils Petter Molvaer: Hamada

Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer comes to the UK on tour next week, with the material from this session. Molvaer composes extensively for movies and adverts, and the sense that his work is complementary to visuals is always strong. But for Hamada, he mixes his evocative landscape sound with a fiercer, even threatening quality imparted by startling percussion eruptions and the formidable resources of the guitarist Eivind Aarset. It sounds like business as usual in the solemnly breathy solo trumpet opening of Exhumation, but growling bass tones and a quivering guitar build as the brooding theme becomes more songlike. Icy Altitude is a delicate curl of trumpet smoke over a long electronic hum, but the sudden howl of Friction, with its clamouring guitar and Audun Kleive's thrashing percussion arrives like a 21st-century Bitches Brew.
