The weekend's TV highlights
Saturday 21 August BBC Proms 2010 6.40pm, BBC2 Tonight, the National Youth Orchestra will tackle Paul Dukas's The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the 19th-century French composer's playful symphonic work inspired by Goethe's poem, and now probably best remembered for its inclusion in Disney's Fantasia. That will be followed by a rendition of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, and the London premiere of Julian Anderson's Fantasias, which will allow each of the NYO's sections a gallop in the spotlight. Semyon Bychkov (above) conducts. The X Factor 7.30pm, ITV1 Simon Cowell moves things round to accommodate Dannii's baby and Cheryl's tropical disease, which means Geri Halliwell gets her chance to pass judgment on the talent of others. She's about as qualified as Amanda Hol … oh. We start, as always, with the auditions and another parade of hopeful Christians innocently leaning in to better inspect the lion's tonsils. Smear yourself in your own drool and roll in hundreds and thousands as the conveyor belt of desperation trundles through your living room to delight and enthral. Beertickers 8pm, Blighty At last, a boozy alternative to trainspotting. Beertickers are hardy souls who travel the country, trying as many ales as possible then ticking them off a list. A good week can see them supping over 20 new beers as they try to catch up with the legendary Brian The Champion who has clocked over 38,000 different brews. Many of the featured hostelries have been serving for centuries but are now under threat of closure. These people are drinking to preserve our national heritage; it makes you proud to be British. Ghost Hunting With Katie, Alex & Friends 10pm, ITV2 Yvette Fielding has somehow made a living and reputation as a "ghost hunter", despite presumably having a capture rate of zero, and tonight she's persuaded non-sceptics Katie Price and Alex Reid, together with friends Gary, Phil and Danny, to venture to creepiest rural Oxfordshire and spend the night on a haunted estate. Will the celebs make a mockery of the laws of nature as understood and expose for the first time the verities of the paranormal? Or will there just be a lot of screaming, ohmigods and jiggly night-vision camerawork? Robyn Hitchcock: I Often Dream Of Trains 11pm, Sky Arts 1 In 1984 former Soft Boys singer Robyn Hitchcock made his third solo album, the Syd Barrett-influenced I Often Dream Of Trains; 25 years later he took it on tour. This film follows Hitchcock as he performs the album in New York, playing songs like Uncorrected Personality Traits and Nocturne with long-term collaborators Terry Edwards and Tim Keegan. Hitchcock's always skirted on the edges of the true cult status you feel he'd like, but the album's combination of bleak themes, surrealist humour and psychedelic melody has dated well. Sunday 22 August Aston Villa v Newcastle United; Fulham v Manchester United 12.45pm, ESPN; 3.30pm, Sky Sports 1 Despite the abrupt loss of manager Martin O'Neill, Aston Villa made a decent start to the season, albeit against hapless opposition in the form of West Ham. A resurgent Newcastle, on the bounce back up from the Championship, may prove more of a handful. As for Man Utd, they face their bogey team, Fulham, who have made a habit of insolently turning them over in the last few seasons – neutrals will hope that with Bobby Zamora leading the line, they can do so again today. Mountain Gorilla 8pm, BBC2 Poaching and the civil wars in Rwanda and the Congo have decimated the mountain gorilla population, but around 700 survive. 65 are silverbacks, the dominant male leaders that father the next generation. Patrick Stewart narrates a film that follows Titus, a 35-year-old silverback struggling to hold onto control of his group; teenage upstart Marembo, anxious to prove he's boss; and young adult Rochina, fighting off Marembo's attempts to gain ascendancy. Remarkable footage and a scholarly narration make this a fascinating insight into the social hierarchy of gorillas. Vexed 9pm, BBC2 "So, let me guess – obesity and OCD right?" "She's a cleaner." Jack Armstrong (Toby Stephens) bulldozes through tonight's case set in a Priory-style rehab clinic with all the charm of an 80s cop who's found himself on duty in 2010 – a kind of posh, reverse Gene Hunt. It feels slightly stretched to fill an hour, but there's a lot to enjoy here, especially Kate's (Lucy Punch) awkward marriage counselling session. Ultimate Air Jaws 9pm, Discovery Where would the Discovery channel be without sharks? In tonight's double bill of great white love we follow photographer Chris Fallows as he heads to the coast of Mossel Bay in South Africa to try and find out why great white sharks in the area like to jump out of the water. To get on Discovery, perhaps? Thanks to the world of the high-speed HD camera, these split-second leaps are drawn out for a minute of balletic footage, as the sharks breach the surface of the water. Then we're off Into The Shark Bite – basically an hour of shark dentistry. Martin Clunes – Horse Power 9pm, ITV1 Mr Clunes is probably the right man to present this easy-going four-parter that looks at the relationship between man and horse – he owns a few and he finds them somewhat mysterious, and then he narrates in that smooth, everything-will-be-alright tone that is perfectly suited to Sunday evenings. It's the standard celeb documentary format where Clunes travels the globe, dresses up in outfits, makes a fool of himself when required and responds heartily to whatever new encounter he is experiencing. He starts his tour in Dubai, where the local oil money has bought a $1.5 billion horseracing circuit. Joe Strummer Night 10pm, Sky Arts 1 Such was the reach of the Clash and their frontman, tonight there's an opportunity to watch two documentary films about Joe Strummer and the legend he helped create. First up is Strummerville, a doc by man-about-punk Don Letts, which traces the influence that the Strummerville charity has had since the singer's untimely death in 2002. Following that, there's the great Westway To The World (also by Letts), which finds the band, 18 years after their split, celebrating their strengths and copping to their flaws. Group therapy, in a word.
