Wimbledon 2011: Caroline Wozniacki holds off Razzano's late surge
Caroline Wozniacki, the world No1 who is nobody's favourite to win her first grand slam title here, is still in the shake-up after taking apart Virginie Razzano 6-1, 6-3 in 66 convincing minutes on Court 2. Her French opponent struggled to discover any fluidity until the closing exchanges of the contest, with only a couple of blistering ground strokes in the 13th game offering a hint of quality. But when facing the opening two of what would be five match points, at 15-40 and 2-5 down in the second set, Razzano's confidence surged. She put away a smashed winner on the first attempt and a let was called on the subsequent match point when an errant ball from an adjoining court bounced into the middle of the rally. When they replayed the point Razzano again had the killer touch, dispatching a searing forehand winner that gave the Dane no chance. Wozniacki, who says grass is her favourite surface, forced a third match point but an unforced error into the net took the game back to deuce. Razzano closed out the game, moving into the net behind a forehand that was becoming dominant just too late in the match. At 3-5 down and 15-15 on Woznicaki's serve Razzano had a glimmer that she might engineer the break that would have allowed her to draw level in the set, if she could hold serve. But she was unable to win either of the next two points and faced two more match points. After a cross-court forehand saved the fourth, Wozniacki unloaded a first serve that proved a winner, with Razzano only able to get an edge of her racket on the ball.
