Musicians stranded due to volcanic ash

People travelling in and out of Cardiff by air today had to cancel their plans after a cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland caused a blanket of cancellations for all flights to and from Cardiff Airport. Resident Cardiff DJ Bethan Elfyn was unable to fly up to Glasgow for a Radio 1 concert where she would present new music from Welsh band Race Horses. She told me she was due to fly this morning but was turned away at Cardiff Airport's doors: "I cannot think of a stranger thing to happen. I was up at 6.30am and the news was being broadcast on the taxi to the airport – but they didn't mention Scotland being closed. I got to the airport and they just turned me away – I couldn't believe it really. "I really feel for people who are waiting for long haul flights in London" Bethan will now be back at work today – the United Nations concert in Glasgow will continue without her as Race Horses were travelling up by car. "I was hosting the gig and the bands representing Wales. It's just a real shame because I was looking forward to it." Cardiff Indie pop band Los Campesinos! are also battling to get on a long haul flight from London Heathrow to New York to kick off their US tour. Guitarist Neil was with the band as they packed up their minibus to leave Cardiff and said they would use their charm to get a flight. "It has affected our travel plans but we are going on regardless to London to try and get on a flight later today." The band are now racing against the clock to get to their first gig in New York tomorrow – where they will be headlining at a local festival. Lead singer Gareth told me if they don't get a flight they have a back-up plan. "We've managed to get seats on a flight tomorrow morning which should get us in to New York just before the gig starts so hopefully we'll make it in time. "It's unfortunate because it's not the sort of thing that could be re-scheduled. But I think we will make it." Meanwhile other residents in Cardiff are devastated after their holiday plans were ruined. Shirley Jones had her flight to Malaga cancelled and felt frustrated by the service from her tour operator. She said: "I've tried all morning to get through to BMI for more information to be charged a rate of £0.65p per minute, to then have to listen to endless automated messages - to be finalised with a message to inform me that the lines are extremely busy today and could I call back. At this point the lines are cut dead. I'm really, really not happy customer!" See our live blog on travel news from Cardiff Airport here . Update: 18:35 Los Campesinos! announced they won't be able to make it to the festival in New York - see their Twitter status here. Have you had your travel plans disrupted by the volcanic ash?
