Mariah Carey soaks up success at Palm Springs film festival

Mariah Carey appeared to be quite literally drunk on success when she stepped up to collect an award at the Palm Springs film festival on Tuesday night. She danced. She slurred. She froze at the microphone with her eyes rolled to heaven. "Please forgive me," she explained at one stage. "Because I'm a little, um ..." When an audience member prompted that she seemed "fucked up", Carey laughed and said, "Yeah. Oh my goodness." The singer was attending the event to collect the breakthrough performance award for her role as a dowdy social worker in Lee Daniels's Oscar-tipped drama, Precious. Viewers can presumably expect a repeat performance of Tuesday's histrionics if she goes on to win the best supporting actress Oscar in March. Carey wrapped up her woozy, rambling acceptance speech with a heartfelt apology. "Sometimes I get a little difficult," she explained. "Thank you all for listening to my little spiel." Later, Sean Penn appeared to comment on Carey's show when he took to the stage to present another award. "Do you think anything's going to make YouTube tonight?" he asked.
