Derby delight for Stoute as Workforce romps to record victory
Workforce smashed the track record as he gave Ryan Moore his second Classic victory in two days with a runaway win at 6-1 in the Investec Derby at Epsom. The seven-length winner was the trainer Sir Michael Stoute's fifth Epsom Derby success and champion jockey Moore's second Classic following yesterday's win on Snow Fairy in the Oaks. Workforce, who finished second in the Dante Stakes at York last month in his Derby trial when he had problems with the bit which slipped through his mouth, was the only horse to catch the pacemaker At First Sight, who had a commanding lead at Tattenham Corner on the turn into the home straight having led from the start. Moore caught the long-time leader halfway down the straight, eventually going on to win unchallenged by seven lengths. The winner had run only twice before this outstanding victory, having won first time out at Goodwood last year before his prep run at York this season. Stoute said: "It's always a great thrill and seems to get more thrilling. As I said before, the Dante run was unsatisfactory. He was seriously good today and I am thrilled for Ryan. He has got a great temperament and he has put a lot of work into this horse." Moore, who was overcome as he celebrated in the winner's enclosure, reported: "He had a really clean run, I was happy where I was in the race. We got a dream run and he quickened really well. The ground was fast enough for him, but he's a really good horse and I'm delighted with that. "This is the most important race to me, it's great to ride for the boss [Stoute] and Prince Khalid [Abdullah, the owner]. It's really good day." The winning jockey will now bid to complete a Classic treble tomorrow when he rides Ice Blue in the French Derby at Chantilly. The Aidan O'Brien-trained At First Sight, who went off at 100-1 as pacemaker for his two stable companions, the 9-4 favourite Jan Vermeer and Midas Touch, stayed on for second and Rewilding, the well-backed mount of Frankie Dettori, finished third at 9-2. Jan Vermeer ran on for fourth but never looked particularly happy on the track.
