Johnny Cash: American VI: Ain't No Grave

The late Johnny Cash adopted many guises – tough guy, God-fearing, even comic. Yet his last years were dominated by a series of albums, recorded with producer Rick Rubin, that, in amplifying the myth of the granite-faced "Man in Black", also revealed something of Cash's true personality. This is the final instalment, largely leftovers, mostly from the period between the death of his wife and his own demise in 2003 . Inevitably, it's not as strong as its predecessors, but there's wit alongside the solemnity. The last song? The wistful Hawaiian spiritual "Aloha Oe", which translates as "farewell to thee".
