New music: Bat for Lashes – Laura

Reading on mobile? Watch here Fully aware that her last (and possibly only?) great single, Daniel , was given a first name for a title, Bat for Lashes – aka Natasha Khan – is back with Laura, a sort of downbeat sequel. While Daniel evoked the flush of young love ("I found a home in your eyes, we'll never be apart"), the mournful Laura – which sounds as if it came from mooted sessions with Video Games writer Justin Parker – finds Khan trying to convince a friend that she's more than her celebrity lifestyle. "You say that they've all left you behind," she sings over warm piano, "your heart broke when the party died". There's a sweeping, dramatic beauty to it, Khan's voice sounding more impassioned with each chorus. In the video, the Laura character seems to be represented by an elderly gentleman in a dress, with whom Khan does a spot of dancing – but only after she's cut some rug with Marques Toliver , who pops up for a cameo. Lovely stuff. • Laura is taken from the album The Haunted Man, due out on 15 October.
