Neon Quartet: Catch Me – review
In a career of 40-odd years, British saxophonist Stan Sulzmann has acquired a heavyweight reputation on both sides of the Atlantic, but he is usually to be found in the company of the youngest and sharpest players around. The latest edition of his Neon band boasts Tim Giles on drums, the terrific vibraphone of Jim Hart, and Mercury prize nominee Kit Downes as pianist. Any one of them would bring that extra spark to a band, but it is the total effect that matters and their ensemble playing – controlled, lyrical, constantly intriguing in its patterns and textures – is a model of unselfishness.
