DVD review: Mesrine — Parts 1 & 2

Momentum has made the sensible decision to put both Mesrine films, Killer Instinct and Public Enemy No 1 into a two-disc DVD (or single Blu-Ray). Little known here, Jacques Mesrine was a French criminal of the 1960s and 70s with a scarcely credible history of reckless bank robberies and jailbreaks. Vincent Cassel has a great time with the part, ageing convincingly as a one-man crime wave, and Gérard Depardieu is a slippery crook. Jean-François Richet, who directed the recent Assault on Precinct 13 update, keeps it cracking along viscerally and unpretentiously.
