Champions League: Milan v Tottenham in pictures

The last time that Spurs played Milan at San Siro was back in 1972, years before the players lining up today were born. The Uefa Cup semi-final second leg match finished 1-1 which meant Spurs won 3-2 on aggregate and then went on to beat Wolves in the final Photograph: Nick Potts/PA Ignazio Abate manages to beat Peter Crouch in the air Photograph: Giuseppe Cacace/AFP/Getty Images A right royal midfield tussle between Clarence Seedorf, left, and Wilson Palacios Photograph: Stefano Rellandini/Reuters A surging run by Benoit Assou-Ekotto is brought to a premature end by Abate Photograph: Nick Potts/PA Crouch gets beaten in the air again, this time by Milan keeper Christian Abbiati Photograph: Alessandro Bianchi/Reuters Zlatan Ibrahimovic brings the ball under control as Sandro keeps an eye on the Milan forward Photograph: Daniele Badolato/AP Robinho concentrates as he tries to dribble past Aaron Lennon Photograph: Daniele Badolato/AP Abbiati holds his head before being stretchered off early in the first half Photograph: Giuseppe Cacace/AFP/Getty Images With Tottenham having the most of the first half, Robinho fears that the away side might end up getting the better of the Rossoneri Photograph: Olivier Morin/AFP/Getty Images Milan come out after the break with the bit between their teeth and almost take the lead five minutes into the second half. Mario Yepes gets on the end of a cross from the left and powers a header towards the top corner. The Milan defender and the whole of San Siro are about to celebrate when an orange arm is thrust out to claw the ball away. It's a fantastic reaction save by Heurelho Gomes that's kept Spurs in the game Photograph: Antonio Calanni/AP Yepes can't believe it Photograph: Luca Bruno/AP Not only have Milan got the bit between their teeth they've got their studs flying through the air. It's no wonder that Michael Dawson is having words with Mathieu Flamini after a terrible two-footed lunge by the Milan player caught Vedran Corluka's right foot. It was a horrible and reckless challenge that should have resulted in a red card but the ref chose to show yellowt. What was almost as ugly as the tackle was the fact that several Milan players were complaining that Corluka hadn't been taken off the pitch for treatment and were accusing Spurs of time wasting Photograph: Alex Livesey/Getty Images Blimey things are really hotting up down there. Just before the hour mark Gennaro Gattuso and Spurs' coach Joe Jordan have a frank exchange of views on the sideline, which culminates in the Milan captain grabbing the Scot around the throat. Gattuso what are you doing man? That's JOE JORDAN you're grabbing! You're either extremely brave or extremely stupid Photograph: Mike Egerton/Empics Sport Harry Redknapp gets in between the protagonists to stop any further shenanigans Photograph: Mike Egerton/Empics Sport Gomes displays another pair of safe hands when he collects a cross Photograph: Luca Bruno/AP Crouch bundles into Gattuso as they go for the ball Photograph: Claudio Villa/Getty Images Watch out Crouchie, he wasn't keen on your challenge and you've already seen he's not afraid to take on people a lot taller than himself Photograph: Alex Livesey/Getty Images Told you Photograph: Nick Potts/PA Gattuso next lines up Luka Modric in the cross-hairs of his crazy eyes Photograph: Alex Livesey/Getty Images Finally, in the 75th minute, Gattuso receives a long overdue yellow card when he goes through the back of Steven Pienaar. That booking means he'll miss the second leg – lets hope it doesn't make him even angrier Photograph: Daniele Badolato/AP With 10 minutes to go, Tottenham break and Aaron Lennon picks up the ball in his own half before galloping off towards the Milan goal. Just outside the area he skips over the scything legs of Mario Yepes and then slides the ball left ... Photograph: Alex Livesey/Getty Images ... where Crouch is on his own in acres of space to sweep the ball past Marco Amelia. That's 1-0 to Tottenham Photograph: Nick Potts/PA It's no wonder Crouch has a big grin on his face, he did well to score with a first-time strike, especially as he scuffed it slightly. He won't care, Spurs have a precious away goal ... Photograph: Daniele Badolato/AP The goalscorer thanks the provider Photograph: Alex Livesey/Getty Images The big man then salutes the travelling fans Photograph: Alessandro Bianchi/Reuters In injury time Milan think they've salvaged a draw when Ibrahimovic scores a nicely executed overhead kick. San Siro erupts, but the celebrations are brought to an abrupt halt when the goal is disallowed because the Swedish striker shoved Dawson in the back in order to give himself room to perform his acrobatic shot. Spurs fans will no doubt be thanking the eagle-eyed linesman for preserving their advantage Photograph: Jonathan Moscrop/AP The final whistle goes and Tottenham record a famous victory Photograph: Alessandro Bianchi/Reuters Yepes and Massimo Oddo aren't happy with the result Photograph: Alessandro Bianchi/Reuters The final whistle might have brought an end to the football but not the action on the pitch ... After shaking Redknapp's hand, Gattuso goes over to Joe Jordan and not only does he continue their spat, he head-butts the Scot Photograph: Mike Egerton/Empics Sport It's no surprise that Jordan's unhappy and all hell breaks loose Photograph: Mike Egerton/Empics Sport In the resulting melee Gattuso also has a go at Sebastien Bassong Photograph: Daniel Dal Zennaro/EPA Now it's Jonathan Woodgate's turn to receive the Gattuso eyeball Photograph: Alex Livesey/Getty Images Rafael van der Vaart acts as peacemaker and attempts to calm down the raging bull that is Gattuso. Not only will the Milan captain miss the next leg but his performance tonight might well warrant a second look from Uefa Photograph: Andrew Couldridge/Action Images
