TV ratings: Foyle's War returns victorious, with nearly 6 million viewers

ITV1's Foyle's War proved more popular than BBC1's Billie Piper drama A Passionate Woman last night, Sunday 11 April. Foyle's War, axed by Simon Shaps but then revived by his successor as ITV director of programmes, Peter Fincham , began a new three-part series with Michael Kitchen's detective investigating the death of a Russian prisoner of war in post-VE Day Hastings. Foyle's War was watched by 5.948 million viewers and attracted a 22.9% share over two hours on ITV1 between 8pm and 10pm. A Passionate Woman, the first instalment of Kay Mellor's two-parter starring Piper and Sue Johnston, had 4.707 million (18.6%) over 90 minutes from 9pm. Live coverage of the concluding round of the 2010 Masters golf tournament drew 3.104 million and a 14.5% share across BBC2 (2.901m/13.5%) and BBC HD (203,000/0.95%) between 6.55pm and midnight. Last night's coverage of Phil Mickelson's third Masters victory – with Lee Westwood in second and Tiger Woods in equal fourth – boosted BBC2's share across the period by 50% compared with its Sunday-night average over the past three months. BBC2's Masters coverage also compared favourably with ratings for the final day of the tournament last year (2.3 million/12%) and in 2008 (2.4 million/13%). The results show for Over the Rainbow attracted 4.49 million (17.2%) to BBC1 over 45 minutes from 8.15pm. This was 21% down on the average BBC1 share in the slot over the past three months, where the network had mostly been scheduling Lark Rise to Candleford. Channel 4's Come Dine With Me had 2.374 million (9.2%) in the 8pm hour, with another 227,000 (0.9%) on Channel 4+1 an hour later. The architecture documentary series The Restoration Man continued on Channel 4 in the 9pm hour with 1.63 million (6.2%), plus a further 154,000 (0.7%) on Channel +1. Channel Five's movie repeat Lara Croft: Tomb Raider had 1.211 million (5%) between 9pm and 10.55pm. Earlier yesterday, ITV1's live coverage of Portsmouth's 2-0 extra time victory over Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final attracted 4.322 million (27.6%) over two hours and 45 minutes from 4pm.
