Wines of the week: David Williams

Avaniel, Bodegas Monteabellon, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2009 (£8.75, Berry Bros & Rudd, bbr.com ) Monteabellon is a new producer in Ribera del Duero with family ties linking it to Vega Sicilia, one of Spain's most-celebrated producers. But whereas Vega Sicilia is all about grandeur and power, this is more about affordable, youthful charm. It's a fresh but by no means simple, unoaked red from the tempranillo-grape variety with a graceful dark-cherry character. De Grendel Winifred Semillon/Viognier/Chardonnay, Durbanville, South Africa 2009 (£9.99, Oddbins ) From a consistently impressive producer (look out too for their excellent sauvignon blanc), this is an unusual blend on paper, but it works, drawing the disparate grape varieties together into a seamless, delicious whole. It kicks off with aromas of citrus fruit , before giving way to a generous stone-fruit palate and a clean refreshing finish. El Transistor, Telmo Rodriguez, Rueda, Spain 2009 (£17.99, Adnams, cellarandkitchen.adnams.co.uk ) Telmo Rodriguez makes brilliant wine in a number of different places in Spain and here he's come up with an intense multi-faceted white from gnarly old verdejo vines in Rueda. It's pungently aromatic on the nose, with a broad, silky mouthfeel, and a finish that just keeps on going. Wonderful stuff, worth every penny.
