Old and new
Historic home: Devon. Henry VIII apparently gave this miniature manor to a supporter after it was wrested off Tavistock Abbey. The interior teems with antiquity: ornate plasterwork, a huge inglenook, stained glass, elaborate panelling and a plank and muntin screen. It is in the centre of Hatherleigh and is amply proportioned: three receptions, a sun room, a study, a large kitchen with utility room and four bedrooms. The £350,000 price reflects the disappointment of the tiny courtyard garden. Jackson-Stops & Staff , 01392 214222 Photograph: Jackson-Stops & Staff Photograph: guardian.co.uk Historic home: Suffolk. Stood on the edge of the village of Combs near Stowmarket for nearly 500 years, this three-bedder's vintage is still visible in the inglenook fireplaces and bread ovens in the two receptions, and the heavily beamed ceilings. More recent additions include a vaulted kitchen and garage, reclaimed bricks on the ground floor and a rethatched roof. The study could be a fourth bedroom and large cottage gardens swirl around it. Cost: £360,000. Jackson-Stops & Staff , 01473 218218 Photograph: Jackson-Stops & Staff Photograph: guardian.co.uk New build: Northumbria. This £525,000 home arose from the ruins of a farmhouse near Beal. It is new inside and out, but tactfully conservative in looks. From the oak-floored living room and kitchen/diner you can gaze across the north sea to Holy Island, while the master bedroom looks out to Bamburgh Castle. The wooden staircase to the four bedrooms is hand-crafted and a third of an acre of garden unrolls beyond the large patio. You’ll need a banker’s bonus to fund this £4.95m glass palace; the rest of us would be crippled by the window cleaning bills alone. But it shows how glorious modernity can be. The frameless glass walls absorb the private part of Highgate cemetery, which lies directly behind. Inside the upstairs kitchen has a retractable roof so can become an open courtyard in summer, a bespoke glass desk unit ornaments the study, there’s a cinema room in the basement and all four bedrooms have an en suite. It came on the market at £425,000 and, with 2.5 acres of land and stables, it’s worth a similar sum, but it’s shed £100,000 in hope of a quick sale. Yes, it’s a bungalow but it’s a grandiose one with three reception rooms, three bedrooms and a full-length attic room that could be converted. You may, with planners’ consent, also annexe the garage block. Green pasture surrounds it but it’s close to the village of Rowley.
