Personally I think he's a bit of a hero but maybe this time he's over-stepped the mark. Jamie Oliver has been tweeting that the obese and binge-drinkers be billed for their cost to the NHS. As the Daily Mail reports: In a rant on Twitter, the 34-year-old berated 'idiot weekend yobbo binge drinkers' for wasting resources that should be reserved for the genuinely ill. The father-of-three went on to suggest that similar penalties could be applied to obese people who eat unhealthily. He said: 'We must start fining these idiot weekend yobbo binge drinkers for their cost to the UK NHS, then spend the money on people that really need help. 'We can't afford fixing drunks. People in need have no choice; weekend drunks have a choice.' Which begs questions how would such a policy be enforced. Would everyone who pitched-up at A&E required to take a breathalyser test? Would obese patients who joined a gym get a discount? And is Jamie considering a career in politics? And for which party, it's difficult to tell. Jamie later explained he made the comments after being moved by scenes in the BBC documentary about Great Ormond Street Hospital – but as (another) reactionary wag pointed out on the comment board, doesn't having three children (and another on the way) place a burden on the NHS also? Step away Jamie, you'll only get barbecued. Besides, would you refuse to serve one of your Elvis Burgers to customer with a high BMI? Probably not.
