Cardiff Airport closes due to volcanic ash
Cardiff Airport will be closed until 1pm today following the return of the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland, but some airlines have kept check-ins open in the hope flights will resume as normal this afternoon. Airport officials said they would know more information from National Air Traffic service by mid morning today, but are still advising passengers to check with their airline before travelling. NATs closed airspace across most parts of the UK this morning as the shape of the ash cloud changed and the Civil Aviation Authority declared Cardiff a no-fly zone. A spokesperson for Cardiff Airport Cassie Houghton said the closure is a blow to staff. "Because we have been constantly monitoring the situation over the last couple of weeks we have been quite prepared. "We had an understanding yesterday that there may be closure but obviously it is a disruption to the staff. "A number of airlines had kept check ins open in the hope they will open this afternoon but it's not an easy situation for anyone." We'll keep this blog updated with more information when it comes. Check Cardiff Airport's live flight information here . Update: 11:30 Cardiff Airport reopened at 11am this morning but with many flights cancelled after the previous closure - you should still check with your airline before travelling and check the airports live information site.
