TV ratings: Father & Son launches with 5.2m viewers

ITV1's new Dougray Scott drama Father & Son launched with more than 5 million viewers, winning the 9pm ratings battle last night, Monday 7 June. Father & Son, written by the late Frank Deasy, stars Scott as a reformed gangster drawn back to the Manchester underworld when his son witnesses a shooting and is the latest ITV1 drama to be stripped across consecutive nights. The four-parter plays out until Thursday. The drama opened with 5.173 million viewers and a 21.6% audience share on ITV1, with a further 177,000 (0.8%) for the ITV1 HD simulcast. 9pm competition included BBC1 documentary For Queen and Country (3.224 million/13.5%, 39,000/0.2%) and the return of Mary Queen of Shops (2.605 million/10.9%) to BBC2 for a new series. Channel Five's documentary about an amateur dramatic society putting on a West End play with the help of a famous actor, David Jason: The Show Must Go On!, attracted 511,000 (2.1%). Channel 4's terrestrial premiere of the film Cloverfield had 1.629 million (7.2%) from 9pm, with a further 285,000 (1.9%) on Channel 4+1. ITV1 also last night broadcast two of the Coronation Street episodes pulled last week because of the Cumbria shootings . The episodes due to be broadcast last Wednesday and Thursday featured the ongoing storyline with prison escapee Tony Gordon, played by Gary O'Brien, holding hostages in the Underworld clothing factory armed with a gun. Coronation Street attracted 8.791 million (40.2%) on ITV1 from 7.30pm, with a further 316,000 (1.4%) on ITV1 HD. The second Monday episode had 8.902 million (37.1%) on ITV1 from 8.30pm and 281,000 (1.2%) on ITV1 HD.
