Bookmarked: What's the matter with Leeds Kirkgate Market?
There's a thought-provoking post called What's the matter with Kirkgate Market? on the future of struggling facility over at The Culture Vulture by guest blogger Richard Ramsden: "It's a huge place, packed with traders hawking everything under the sun, but it's seen better days, and despite several bursts of investment over the last couple of decades, it seems to have lost its way. Footfall is down, and there are plenty of empty stalls. Somewhere down the years, Kirkgate lost its swagger." Ramsden - who also writes the Them Apples blog - argues that the market needs fresh investment but mustn't be gentrified (it isn't the Victoria Quarter) and needs to 'be brave' to re-establish itself as a cultural and social hub. Leeds council chief executive Tom Riordan has weighed in with his opinion on one of the comments. For more on Kirkgate Market, also see the blog from support group Friends of Kirkgate Market .
