Seven-year-old named as victim of Canton house fire

A seven-year-old boy has died following a house fire in Cardiff last night, South Wales Police have confirmed. Yaseen Ali sustained fatal injuries after the fire broke out in a bedroom at 25 Severn Road, Canton. An investigation into the cause of fire is underway. South Wales Fire and Rescue service said they were called to the house at 6.32pm yesterday evening and were confronted with a heavily smoke-logged building with smoke coming from the first floor window. Two other people were also injured in the fire, and all three victims were taken to University Hospital Wales, Heath, to be treated. It is thought Yaseen's twin sister and mother were in the house at the time. Neighbours and friends of the family have described Yaseen as an "intelligent and polite boy" and the Muslim family as "quiet and friendly". Community saddened by loss of 'polite intelligent boy' Locals have said the family attended the Jamia Masjid Bilal Mosque on Severn Road and that Yaseen's father was a taxi driver. Neighbours said they heard ambulances and saw three fire engines attend the scene. Family friend, Amina Shabaan from Grangetown, who taught arabic to Yaseen's mother at the Adult Learning Centre adjacent to the house and often saw the family attending arabic lessons at the Channel View Leisure Centre said: "He was a very good boy and very intelligent and polite. One of my friends text me to let me know the news last night and I hardly slept all night. "The parents looked after them so much and they had a good education. Everyone who has heard about it is very upset. He was one of the best children you've ever seen." Another neighbour, who wished not to be named, said she was with the family while they waited for ambulances to arrive. "I was going shopping and I saw the smoke and the fire engines. When the ambulances arrived they started working on [the boy] and the mother was on the floor crying. She was drifting in and out of consciousness. "The family kept themselves to themselves but I knew the mother and she was an intelligent lady."
