Football League bets to follow this weekend, plus our tipping contest

Welcome to our tipping round-up. Most of you know the drill by now, but for those who don't, every week I post my betting suggestions for the weekend (which you may well wish to steer clear of), as well as our predictions contest. The blog can also act as a talkboard for any Football League-related discussions over the weekend. Brighton to beat Oldham at 6-5 Unoriginal as this may be, 11 wins in 14 games mark Championship-bound Albion as ones to get on side this weekend, especially as the slumping Latics are their hosts. Coming off six defeats in seven and winless in nine, Oldham left it late to lose at Leyton Orient last time out. Brighton are a step up in quality. As their manager, Gus Poyet, stressed this week, his defenders deserve as much credit for their table-topping performances as their productive team-mates – only 26 goals have been conceded in 34 matches, with just 13 against them in 17 away days. It is not a big price for a team away from home, but given the recent form of both teams, Albion would probably be odds-on were this a Premier League market. Torquay to beat Macclesfield at 13-8 Gillingham are well worth your serious consideration at 6-4 for their trip to Burton, but due to a propensity for draws (seven in an 11-game run), Torquay are instead the suggestion, especially as a dangerous mid-season slump looks consigned to history. Six victories in their last 11 matches, with just two defeats , have been rounded off by impressive successes against Shrewsbury (5-0) and Bury (2-1, away). The shrewd loan acquisition from the Shrews of forward Jake Robinson has given added impetus to a squad who have the play-offs in sight. Macclesfield are unbeaten in three, picking up five points in the process, but the Gulls are flying at a higher standard. Last week's top performer was SalvadorDarley, who correctly called four out of the half dozen, while it looks more and more like a two-horse race at the top.
