TV ratings: Dancing on Ice skates off with 8.4 million

The second week of Dancing on Ice drew 8.4 million viewers to ITV1 last night, Sunday 17 January. The talent show featuring the male celebrity skaters for the first time attracted 500,000 fewer viewers than last week's launch night, when the female celebrities competed, although share across the show between 6.45pm and 8.30pm went up one point to 31%, according to unofficial overnight figures. Like most shows last night, audience numbers suffered as share held up, reflecting a tough comparison with last week, when freezing weather and snow boosted TV viewing. Dancing on Ice was probably also affected by Channel 4 moving Celebrity Big Brother forward an hour to 8pm. The dance show's audience peaked in the 15 minutes before 8pm at 9.4 million viewers and a 33% share and dipped to 8.6 million and 29% by the end of the show. Celebrity Big Brother drew 2.5 million viewers and a 9% share in the 8pm hour, with another 504,000 tuning in an hour later on digital catchup service Channel 4 +1. Dancing on Ice's results show at 9.30pm – in which Bobby Davro was voted off – drew 7.1 million viewers and a 27% share over half an hour. Before this, African-set drama Wild At Heart lost 800,000 viewers on last week to 7 million, although share dropped just one point to 25%. ITV1 put BBC1 in second place, but the rival channel had a respectable night. Countryfile pulled in 6.7 million viewers and a 28% share in the 6pm hour, while Antiques Roadshow drew 6.7 million and 25% an hour later. In the 8pm hour, period drama Lark Rise to Candleford pulled in 6.2 million viewers and a 22% share, down 600,000 and one share point on last week's opener. The third and final part of detective drama Wallander, starring Kenneth Branagh, lost 700,000 viewers and two share points to record 4.4 million and 17% over 90 minutes from 9pm. BBC2's coverage of a thrilling Masters snooker final averaged 2.9 million viewers and a 15% share between 8pm and midnight. Viewing peaking at 3.5 million viewers and a 30% share in the quarter hour from 11.30pm as Mark Selby beat Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-9 in a nailbiting finish. A repeat of the final edition of the most recent series of Top Gear drew 2.1 million viewers and an 8% share at 6.55pm. Slumdog Secret Millionaire, in which a British Indian dentist went undercover in Mumbai to decide where to distribute her largesse, pulled in 1.9 million viewers and an 8% share, with another 213,000 on Channel 4 +1. Earlier, the first outing of US comedy drama Glee on Channel 4 drew 1 million and 900,000 viewers – a 4% share in both cases – at 5.35pm and 6.35pm, and another 95,000 and 130,000 on Channel 4 +1. This added to the audience of up to 1.3 million that tuned in to Glee's debut on E4 last week . Channel Five's best audience was for a repeat of Tommy Lee Jones action movie US Marshals, which drew 1.4 million viewers and a 6% share between 9pm and 11.35pm. The second instalment of BBC3's vampire drama Being Human picked up 1.1 million viewers and a 4.1% share of multichannel homes in the hour from 9pm, but down around 300,000 viewers on last week. Sky1's dance show Got to Dance, hosted by Davina McCall, was watched by 752,000 viewers, a 3.1% share of the multichannel audience, in the 6pm hour. This was down from 817,000 last week and the 1.14 million it achieved on its opening night a fortnight ago in a 7pm slot. • To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email [email protected] or phone 020 3353 3857.
