Leeds today - Young Guns, Ed Balls and Bramley pianos

Good morning Leeds. Today I'm looking at the latest in the campaign to save South Leeds Sports Centre - council leader Keith Wakefield has paid a visit to the facility and met campaigners fighting closure plans. The Leeds HMO Lobby - which successfully fought for tighter legislation over student homes in the Headingley area - could find its victory short-lived. Guest blogger Dr Richard Tyler looks at the latest moves by government. And Martin Hickes finds that, despite the money woes at Headingley, the spirit of cricket was alive and well during the Pakistan verus Australia Test. By the way, I'm on a training course at Trinity College in Horsforth today and tomorrow, but will be back in full swing on Wednesday. Here's what's making Leeds tick today A row of empty shops in Leeds is being turned into social housing for people over 55 at a cost of £4 million, reports the BBC . Greenpeace campaigners took to a BP petrol station forecourt in Guiseley to protest about the company's plans to pump oil from the 'tar sands' of Canada, reports the Wharfedale and Airedale Observer . The 'Wharfedale' also reports that the housing developer working on Menston's former High Royds psychiatric hospital site says it will work with English Heritage over the "at-risk" status of hospital grounds. "Not jumping for joy; not thrilled; City of Leeds School only got what it deserved: the rest of its life back forever." - Leeds schools campaigner Victoria Jaquiss writes about City of Leeds, Parklands and the future of girls-only education in Leeds following last week's all-important executive board meeting. Leeds's much-publicised bin police - an invasion of privacy or just a load of old rubbish? Leeds blogger Sean Murricane wades into the controversy. Police have secured a dispersal order to deal with anti-social behaviour and disorder in the centre of Leeds. Young Guns are interviewed by Jessica Thornsby over at Leeds Music Scene . Ed Balls is still 'fighting to win' Labour leadership race, says the Guardian . The Morley MP admits major blow to his campaign following decision by Unite union's political committee to back Ed Miliband. Tea at the Sunshine Bakery in Chapel Allerton is reviewed at The Good Dr blog. Chapel Allerton Arts Festival is still looking for submission s for the Chapel Allerton Short Film Festival - so any budding Spielbergs out there - send your submissions in. The world's oldest working railway - in Middleton - is offering visitors the chance to enjoy a pleasant summer's day on the cheap, reports Leeds Guide . Do you have news, views or events to share?
