TV ratings: Man Utd match beats MasterChef final

Football trumped cookery in the ratings last night, Wednesday 7 April, with Manchester United's Champions League exit proving more popular than the MasterChef final. ITV1's live coverage of Man Utd being dumped out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich attracted 7.542 million viewers and a 30.6% share over two hours from 7.45pm, according to unofficial overnights. Viewing peaked at 8.8 million (34%) in the five minutes from 9.30pm. Overall, ITV1's Live Uefa Champions League coverage, including pre- and post-match analysis, averaged 6.807 million (28%) over two and half hours from 7.30pm. BBC1's MasterChef: the Final, won by former advertising executive Dhruv Baker, pulled in 5.563 million viewers (21.8%) in the 9pm hour. In its final quarter hour MasterChef (6.658 million/27.1%) pulled ahead of ITV1's football coverage (3.287 million/13.4%) after the final whistle had blown at Old Trafford. Other 9pm shows included the second part of BBC2 documentary series Who Needs Fathers?, with 822,000 viewers (3.2%) over 50 minutes. Channel Five's NCIS had 1.782 million (7%) in the 9pm hour, while Channel 4's Embarassing Bodies: Charlotte's Story attracted 2.352 million (9.2%). A further 449,000 watched an hour later on Channel 4 +1. Channel 4's version of the US "roast" format launched with Bruce Forsyth as its subject last night, with two more to follow – tonight's will feature Sharon Osbourne. Bruce Forsyth: a Comedy Roast drew 1.87 million (10.1%) between 10pm and 11.05pm, with another 164,00 (1.5%) on Channel 4 +1. School drama Waterloo Road returned to BBC1 for the second half of its fifth series with 4.384 million (17.9%) in the 8pm hour.
